The Ember – 7th winter school of Studio Kokyu

The Ember is seven days of intensive physical and vocal training. The work comprises practices from Kokyu Studio training. Their goal is to explore the actor/performer’s within-a-group action resulting from regular immersion in precise structures.

Work elements:

  • Kokyu training, the Studio’s own training, combining individual training and choir training, body, breathing and voice work
  • Contact running, intensive group practice, awakening vigilance and mutual listening in dynamic action
  • Partner training, a tool for studying the physicality of a dialogic situation. It is underlain by contact as it is understood in aikido and focuses on listening with the whole body and a readiness to follow carefully and take the lead
  • Global resonator, a set of exercises aimed at discovering the full vibrational qualities of the voice in the performer’s body
  • Working with text, a practice derived from the idea of text deconstruction, aimed at encountering the text as a living process, focused on searching for the physicality of the text.

Through a thorough study of the above practices, we want to guide workshop participants through a journey to the source of their inner energy. They will also explore the relationship with a partner as well as deepening the quality of joint action. The ability to recognize structures is also serve as a potential opening for improvisation works.

The Kokyu Studio Winter School is aimed at people with varying degrees of professional experience. No professional qualifications are required, but we expect participants to be open, curious and ready for intensive training.
