OPEN CALL. Praktykowanie działania 2026/2027

  • What is the nature of action?
  • What is precision and what is the role of improvisation?
  • How can one invoke life within intricate structures without falling into mechanical reproduction?
  • Does training accompany the actor’s creative process, or is it an integral part of it?
  • Can the creative act be separated from training?
  • What is personal technique and how can it be developed?
  • Is text an action?

The environment for these and many other questions will be the field shaped by 10 years of research conducted by Studio Kokyu — a space between the performer’s training and the warrior’s training, between the broadly understood world of theatre and Aikido, the traditional Japanese martial art.

Studio Kokyu, as a place of practice, opens its doors and invites 5 to 8 individuals ready for regular work from September 28, 2026 to March 19, 2027.

We will focus both on the individual training of the performer and on group work. Our practice will include physical, vocal, and mental training, as well as work with text. We will build and develop performative structures — individual, partner-based, and ensemble — while deepening a personal, practical understanding of the essence of action and the intentions that stand behind it.

During this year’s edition of Practicing Action, the main focus will be a performative structure that functions both as practice (training) and as performance. We call it “Action Trinity – The Letter.”

We also anticipate working on entirely new material — its final shape and details will emerge during the process itself, as a natural result of encountering the new group of participants and responding to its dynamics and direction.

The project will be led by Przemysław Błaszczak — leader and founder of Studio Kokyu — together with Studio actors.

The work will take the form of regular sessions from Monday to Friday (approximately 5–6 hours per day) and will take place at Studio Na Grobli at the Grotowski Institute.

Participation in the project also includes attending Aikido training sessions at the Na Grobli Aikikai dojo.

Depending on the number of applications, we plan to hold a selection workshop during which the final group will be chosen.
Selection workshop dates: June 24–26, 2026.

Participation is possible only for the full duration of the project. This year’s edition is fee-based. Participants are required to arrange accommodation in Wrocław for the entire duration of the project.
