What bloody man is that?
Macbeth is a mirror.
It reflects not only the story of an individual striving for power, but also the mechanism of a world in which the desire to possess and dominate poisons language, the body, and human bonds.
“Who is this man so steeped in blood? / What bloody man is that?” — the title of Studio Kokyu’s performance inspired by the drama of William Shakespeare — becomes a question about the present moment: about the logic of “MORE,” which fuels the ambitions of leaders, moves the masses, builds empires, and ultimately drives nations toward war. In a world where political decisions unleash real violence, and propaganda and fear become instruments of control, *Macbeth* resounds as both a warning — and a diagnosis.
In creating this performance, we seek a contemporary ritual — a rite woven of body, voice, and text; a structure capable of restoring meaning to words such as community, responsibility, boundary. We enact it to understand how easily a human being steps into darkness when promised “more,” and also to attempt to disenchant and transform reality: to knock it out of its mechanical course, to disturb the hypnosis in which violence appears inevitable.
In its formal layer, the performance draws on the tradition of Teatr Ubogi and laboratory work. Reducing scenography and extra-theatrical means to an absolute minimum, the creators focus on the actor and the text: on the rhythm of the word, the intensity of the voice, the physical tension of presence. The body becomes a space of conflict — a field where violence, desire, and fear reveal themselves.
The project was created within the international ensemble of Studio Kokyu, reflecting the contemporary world: a reality shaped by people speaking different languages and coming from diverse cultures, coexisting in tension and in dialogue. The final version of the script was developed during rehearsals — the result of collective exploration of the drama and a search for a new perspective on the questions inscribed in the original text.
Macbeth asks: how much can one lose in order to have more?
And we ask: can this spiral be stopped — before it begins again?
