Action Trinity – The Letter (III)

Action Trinity – The Letter version III is the newest iteration of Studio Kokyu’s work, developed within the educational and research project Practicing Action. It continues and expands the line of exploration initiated in Action Medea: building a structure that can be viewed as a performance, yet above all remains a practice — a tool for training and working on oneself.

In Trinity – The Letter we search for a contemporary ritual. Not as stylization or quotation from ancient rites, but as a real action: a repeatable, precise form that organizes attention, activates presence, and builds relationship. This structure does not rely on theatrical architecture or complex stage technology. Its core lies in the skills of the performers: body, voice, rhythm, listening, tension, and responsibility for a shared composition.

We perform this form as a score. It is a sequence of tasks and exercises that lead through effort, concentration, correction, and repetition. In this way the action becomes simultaneously an event for spectators and a tool of everyday work — simple in form, yet demanding.

The literary inspiration is the 3rd-century Hymn of the Pearl, a fragment of the apocryphal Acts of Thomas. The text functions here as a call — not as a story to be told, but as an impulse that activates practice. Physical actions and vocal actions are combined, and the word is treated as material: rhythmic, operative, capable of changing the temperature of presence. What is spoken does not describe the action — it drives it.

It is important to emphasize that Trinity – The Letter is itself a letter. The action travels through the people who created and practiced it. It emerged in changing constellations and numbers of participants, each leaving their own trace: an imprint of technique, experience, listening, and rhythm. These traces do not disappear — they remain in the structure and pass forward. In this sense Trinity – The Letter is like a message in a bottle: carried through time, reactivated at every meeting.

The meeting with the audience is an opportunity to share this practice as a theatrical event — simple in form, yet complete. We do not treat it as a “finished work.” It is rather a testimony of practice: a form that lives only when performed.
